Have you ever wondered whether you’ve set the “right” goals? Whether you’ve been setting goals for years, or just starting out, mastering the right direction can transform your motivation and success. In this article, we'll walk you through a simple, step-by-step guide to setting goals that not only move you away from pain but also pull you toward your dreams.
By the end of this article, you'll know exactly how to create goals that inspire and motivate you. Let's dive right in!
Step 1: Recognise the Difference Between Pain-Avoidance and Inspiring Goals
As Sarah and I were looking at our list of goals for this year, we noticed we had a huge number of boring or moving away from pain goals!
These were goals that we either had to do, or wanted to do. These included:
Submit tax returns for our companies and personal tax. Not very exciting, but necessary. Yawn…
Selling one property — we wanted to reallocate those funds elsewhere. Selling is a lot more work than most people realise.
Renewing the lease for one of our commercial tenants
While avoiding pain can be a powerful motivating tool, and you can often feel a sense of relief afterwards, it can limit your life fulfilment.
When I haven’t had any positive goals, I’ve often felt like I didn’t have a compelling future. It is a miserable way to live your life, and difficult to motivate yourself to take any action at all.
On the other hand, inspiring goals keep you focused on your passions and long-term success.
Looking down our list of Inspiring Goals:
We wanted to have an exciting travel adventure, so we booked a spiritual yoga retreat to India for next year. We are really looking forward to the experience, and many of our friends are going too. Hugfest!
Our home garage conversion is back on the list. We’ve put it on and off a few times, but we’re leaning more towards completing it now. It will provide a spacious, light airy space for my gym and yoga.
We’re writing our seventh book! We don’t have any details to share just yet, as we are taking some time planning out the structure. But we are stoked about it!
Reflect on your current goals and highlight the inspiring ones — perhaps put a ⭐ golden star or 😀 smiling emoji next to those. How did you get on? Were your goals primarily aimed at avoiding pain or achieving something meaningful and inspiring?
Step 2: Craft Clear and Compelling Inspiring Goals
I invite you to close your eyes for a moment and visualise your future. What does a successful, fulfilling life look like to you? What are your passions? Use this vision to identify some inspiring goals.
Next, write down your inspiring goals clearly. You can make a vision board if that floats your boat. This helps you stay motivated and keeps you on the right path.
Finally, implement the following practices to ensure you stay on track and achieve your inspiring goals.
Break down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes them less overwhelming and easier to achieve step-by-step. Try not to get overwhelmed here. You only need to do the next task, not everything at once.
Regularly review and adjust your goals as needed. We look at our goals every week. Life changes, and you need to be flexible enough to adapt while still guiding you toward your dream life.
By following these steps, you can set goals that inspire and motivate you. Remember, the key is to balance pain-avoidance with inspiring, meaningful goals. Make sure that ALL of them move you towards you ultimate life.
Now it's your turn to put this into practice!

Some really great points. Awareness to the type of goals we're setting is something I had never thought about. I like the idea of identifying inspiring goals and, most importantly for me, breaking them down into manageable bits. Thank you for sharing this today!
