How Giving Can Raise Your Income (Seriously)
Sarah and I have always believed in giving — not as a strategy to get more, but because it's simply the right thing to do.
There was a time when we couldn't give.
When I walked away from my corporate job, we had two toddlers and a mortgage we weren’t sure we could pay — we were terrified of losing our home. We lived on rice and beans, because it was one of the cheapest meals we could afford at the time.
So, no, we weren’t donating money back then. We were in survival mode. We didn’t give in order to “get something back,” and we never have.
But years later, something interesting happened.
When we started making large donations from a place of financial strength and purpose, we also experienced something we never expected…
We had our highest income year ever!
The Research That Might Surprise You
Economist Arthur Brooks, in his book Who Really Cares, dug deep into what happens when people give to charity.
Using data from the Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey of 30,000 American families, he found that for every $1 donated, individuals experienced an average increase of $3.75 in income — a 275% return.
That’s not wishful thinking. That’s the data.
Brooks initially set out to disprove the idea that giving leads to wealth. But after reviewing the evidence, he was shocked to find that:
“Rockefeller was right. And I was wrong.”
Giving isn’t a cost. It’s a catalyst.
Giving With Purpose
When Sarah and I donate now, it’s not because we’re hoping to get something back. We do it to contribute, to support those in need, and to live by our values.
We donate 10% of our book revenue to charity to help feed UK children and their families in need. And for every person who joins our 1-year mentoring programme, we provide 400 meals for children who are struggling with hunger.
We’ve learned that real wealth isn’t just about what you have — it’s about what you’re able to give back. And as you step into greater purpose, you might just discover that prosperity is waiting on the other side of contribution.
From Scarcity to Abundance
If you’re in a tight financial place, please don’t feel guilt or pressure to give. We’ve been there. But when you can, and when it’s done from a place of love — giving has the power to shift your energy, your perspective, and yes, even your financial results.
Not because of magic.
But because you become the kind of person who lives in trust, gratitude, and service — and those qualities attract opportunities and growth.
