Is Life a Game?
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”
— Albert Einstein
If we are living in a matrix style game created in the future, or if the Universe (Infinite Intelligence, Divine Consciousness, or God) is playing multiple iterations of itself through us to evolve, we may never really know until we reach the end of the game.
“We can never prove we’re not in a computer simulation because any evidence of ordinary reality could be simulated.”
— David J. Chalmers, University Professor of Philosophy and Co-Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Consciousness at New York University
We’ve all seen for ourselves how special effects in movies are now so realistic, that we often don’t know what is real, and what is not. Virtual games are becoming more realistic and interactive too. With Moore’s Law stating that processing power doubles every 18 months, a virtual reality indistinguishable from our “real” material world doesn’t sound that far off. There are many people who already believe we are in a simulation.
“If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then games will be indistinguishable from reality…Therefore we are most likely in a simulation.”
— Elon Musk
Even if you don’t believe we could possibly be living in a game…there are so many parallels between life and a virtual reality game. So let’s explore how we can use this information to up-level our lives…and have more fun while we’re at it. Let’s start with our Avatar.
Our Character or Avatar
We’ve all been dealt a different avatar. We come in all shapes, sizes, colours, abilities and home circumstances. However, our first step is to realise that it doesn’t matter what cards we were dealt, it is how we play the game that counts. We can either sit back passively and just go through the motions in the game…or we can actively evolve and progress.
Up-Levelling our Life
We have a range of skills at different levels. These could include anything from managing your money, having great relationships, parenting or spirituality. In gaming we might need to do a number of specific tasks to increase a particular skill level, or we can exchange virtual currency for a skill upgrade.
In our material reality, we also repeat tasks to gain experience and up-level our skills. For example, we might practice throwing balls into a basketball net every day to up-level our accuracy. For another skill we might exchange our money for a book or course to improve our knowledge…and then put it into practice, in order to secure the up-level.
In gaming and the material reality, there are some things you can only access when your character achieves a specific level. For example, in the UK, there are some investments that are not available to most people until you meet the eligibility criteria of a Certified High Net-Worth Investor.

Challenges and Quests
In both gaming and our material reality, we experience challenges. When challenges are too far above our ability we can feel anxious, stressed or overwhelmed. When challenges are too easy, we can become bored. Our ideal flow state is somewhere in the middle — challenging enough to grow our skills and succeed, but not too easy.
Sarah has always enjoyed singing and sings in a choir. She is regularly challenged to learn new songs each month and performs at local charity events.
George has been exercising since he was 13 years old. To up-level his skills he has taken multiple certifications, including Personal Trainer, Calisthenics and Yoga Instructor.
Some challenges are relatively easy to overcome, but others may take us to our lowest lows. These “dark nights of the soul” are the points where, if we decide to take up the Quest, we will experience our greatest transformations and move our character to a new level. Think of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars discovering that his aunt, uncle and home have been destroyed, then taking up the quest to find and help Princess Leia.
Some of the Quests are hidden — most people do not know, or believe they exist.
For example, after we experienced a financial dark night of the soul, we made a commitment to achieve financial freedom as fast as possible. We went all in on this quest. We didn’t know anyone within our network of friends who believed it was possible to retire early. So this was a hidden quest. When Sarah was 39 years old, we realised we had achieved financial freedom and didn’t need to work anymore.

Your Life Meter
In gaming, when you’re life meter runs out, it is “Game Over.” Certain skills or actions can extend your life meter, while others damage it. When your life meter reaches a certain point in the game, then you may find certain abilities are removed or worsened.
This parallels with our material world, as we can extend or shorten our life depending on what we eat, drink, our physical activity and how we manage our stress levels. There are also activities that are more risky than others.
We’ve both had our fair share of physical and mental health issues over the years, so our personal life meter is something we prioritise above most things.
The Ultimate Purpose of the Game of Life
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
— Albert Einstein
Both the game and life are constantly in motion. In gaming we aim to keep up-levelling our skills and complete the quests. Along the way, we may help and work with others to complete challenges, or meet guru’s or mentors to help us reach the next level.
My personal belief is that we are here to grow our skills and evolve to become the best version of ourselves, to improve our lives, our loved ones’ and the planet.
We also have a responsibility to fulfil our purpose, whether that is as a parent, spouse, or our profession. And while we’re at it, realise that life is a game, so let’s have some fun and not take it all so seriously.
